The first crash happened on I-495 north in Amesbury just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, Massachusetts State Police said.

Initial investigation suggests 34-year-old Kruise Herring Delgado, from Lowell, was speeding and driving erratically when he tried to squeeze through a tight gap between a tractor-trailer and Tesla.

Police believe he hit the back of the trailer and was pulled before making contact with the driver's side of the Tesla. The motorcycle then overturned and Delgado was thrown from the bike, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Tesla, a 30-year-old man from Maine, stayed at the scene while the trailer driver did not. Police are unsure whether they were aware of the crash.

The second crash happened on I-95 north in Newburyport at 10:16 p.m. later that night, police said.

After a near-collision between two cars, 21-year-old Daniel Mena, of Lynn, was struck by one of the vehicles and subsequently thrown from his motorcycle, according to police.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Further investigation determined that the license plate on the motorcycle belonged to a different motorcycle, police added.

In addition, one of the vehicles, a 2016 Subaru driven by a 49-year-old Newburyport woman, spun into the grass shoulder of the road and struck a guardrail.

Two other cars also collided with the involved vehicles, police added. All other drivers were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Both crashes are under investigation.
